Human milk oligosaccharides (hMOS) are complex carbohydrates, which are indigestible by infants. hMOS are the third largest solid component of human milk after lactose and fat. The levels of hMOS vary between women, stage of lactation and geography, but in mature human milk hMOS levels vary from 5 to 15 g/L. Around 160 different oligosaccharide structures have been characterized in detail in human milk.
Infancy is a period of rapid growth and development, with a gain of approximately 25% in height and 50% in weight. During this period adequate nutrition is crucial for proper growth and development and even has an impact on longterm health. Human milk is known to fulfill all specific needs of infants during early life, it supports the maturation of the digestive tract and immune system and the development of a well-balanced gut microbiome.
Nucleotides are the building blocks of our DNA (and RNA). A nucleotide is made up of three parts: a phosphate group, a 5-carbon sugar, and a nitrogenous base. The options for the base are one of the following four molecules: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). In RNA thymine (T) is replaced by uracil (U). Five types of nucleotides can be formed (CMP, UMP, GMP, AMP and IMP).
